About Us
Who We Are
Local 299 represents the 60+ fire fighters who are dedicated to protecting the City of Altoona and its citizens. Local 299 is a charter of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) which represents over 280,000 fire fighters and emergency medical personnel in the U.S. and Canada. We are also a member of the Pennsylvania Professional Fire Fighters Association (PPFFA) which represents over 10,000 paid professional Fire Fighters throughout Pennsylvania.
Department Make-up
The department is divided into 4 tricks (A, B, C & D). Each trick works two 10 hour day shifts followed by two 14 hour night shifts. We always have a minimum of 1 Assistant Chief and 12 Firefighters on duty at all times manning 4 fire houses located throughout the city.
Services
The AFD provide a wide range of services to the community including, but not limited to, fire suppression, fire prevention/safety education, Juvenile Firesetters Program, Get Out Alive Program and much more. The Altoona Fire Department also runs a Hazardous Materials Response Team for Blair County.
Part of a Community
The members of Local 299 are also community minded, working with local schools and charitable organizations. We not only work for the community, but we live in it and are part of it.
Altoona Fire Department is ready 24/7, and our motto is, "Always There... Always Ready!" With professional training and professional attitudes, we serve Altoona and its citizens proudly!
